Civil Engineering –Different Opportunities Available
Civil engineering covers a wide area, but first we need to look into what is a civil engineer. Basically it is a description of a person involved in construction of civil projects. This can include transportation, geotechnical, structural and environmental.Civil engineers who are involved in construction transportation usually have the responsibility of designing, maintaining and constructing methods of transport. This would include canals, roads and bridges. Much of this job will be tied into urban development and planning. Overseeing and management is often tied in with these projects.
Structural civil engineering is anything that needs to be constructed. This can include transport or projects like dams and buildings. Some of the earliest examples of this type of engineering were in the form of irrigation like the Archimedes’ screw, which brought water from low lying land to the irrigation ditches in the fields. Geo-technical engineering is the construction of anything in or on the ground. Initially a review of a project would evaluate the conditions of the soil and natural elements involved. This could also include surveillance of the site and improvements to the conditions to make construction safer and stronger. Earthworks are also part of this type of project. Ocean engineering is anything that has to do with the sea and can include jetty construction or oil drilling platforms.Environmental civil engineering concerns the protection of the environment and can include several projects.
Examples of these projects can be green energy like solar and wind turbines. Cleaning up the environment by treatment for waste water, polluted air etc. is also part of environmental engineering. Proposals for certain projects that would have an impact on the environment will also be assessed by an environmental engineer. As you can see there are many facets to a civil engineering job. You will need to specialize in the area that interests you. New technology is opening up and giving new opportunities in this field. This makes it one of the most exciting careers to enter in today.
Civil engineering projects
Civil engineering is a large field and there have been many projects ranging from the Archimedes screw to the construction of the Archimedes’ screw to the creation of the world’s tallest building. Firstly we should answer the question, “what is a civil engineer?” It is a person who is trained to know how to construct anything that is not concerned with the military. Examples of this are geotechnical engineering and construction transportation engineering.
One of the most interesting projects concerning Civil engineering is one that was used for the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) and became one of the five finalists in the competition. It was a project that would help geotechnical engineering. The project’s aim was to build a railway station for the public in the soft ground of the Beacon Hill area which is South of Seattle Washington. The project also involved construction transportation engineering. The tunnels had to be 14 miles long. The problems that were found were the digging into soft soil. This Civil engineering project turned out to be the deepest tunnel ever constructed in soft soil of North America. The engineers solved the problem by making the tunnel in sections and putting extra support as they constructed it.
